Imaru

Boss.

About

Imaru is Fellhollow's dragon and the end of Withering Heights, tuned for power level 5 gear: steel armour or splitbark, a Steel Mace or the Zombie Axe, a Steel Crossbow, a Splitbark Staff or the Necromancer's Staff. She is immune to poison, burning and bleed, so barbed arrows, weapon poison and fire are wasted on her; water and air spells, steel arrows and plain bolts are what you want. She counts as undead, which makes the Salve Amulet the best trinket in the fight (17% more damage to undead). The Shadow Sword hits her spectral form 25% harder.

Bring food that regenerates, not just food that heals: Undead Delight or Eggs Royale for Sea Life (3 health a second for twenty minutes) and Pumpkin Soup or a Pumpkin Spice Infusion for Soul Food. A Dragonblight Shield takes the sting out of her fire breath, and a wand lets a caster hold one too. Whetstone or magical focus plus the matching lesser potion if you want it over quicker. Keep Tempest Shield up for her bolts and spikes and Surge for the dodges.

On the platform she sweeps fire from one side to the other and stomps to send rot spikes at you; both miss you if you stand under her belly, which is also where melee reaches her heart for critical hits. In the air she spits three rot bolts that build Wither; they track, so dodge late, and if you shoot or cast take two shots and then move. After each pattern she flies off for a few seconds. Use that gap to eat.

The mechanic that kills people is the spectral form. She lands in the centre, immune, and charges an attack that takes half your health or all of it. To stop her you have to step into a soul rift and become withered yourself, fight through the rotsworn thralls she raises, and knock her down. Then you have forty seconds to reach a Purification Pool and cleanse the Wither before it finishes you. She does this at the start, again below half health and once more below ten percent, with explosive rot rocks and withered patches on the platform in between; stay close to her so the patches land away from you. If you kill her while withered the state clears on its own and the nearby thralls die with her. On Hard every phase and every thrall comes earlier, and a second player makes the pool runs far safer.

Journal

Once, Imaru was a gentle creature. She and her mate, the black dragon Xikotal, would dance through the air together, lost in their love. Although the dragon's rage still burned inside her, the cooling power of the water she was infused with, calmed her and brought the reason and clarity that she enjoyed.

Dragonkin experiments had robbed her of the one thing she craved, to be a mother. So when the humans came to the region, she convinced Xikotal that they should take them under their wing, becoming protectors and, perhaps, even parents to the fragile things.

Together they built a society with peace and cooperation at its core. The villagers thrived, and Imaru and her mate thrived with them. She used the magic within her to bless her new pets, making sure that she could protect them wherever they were.

How cruel a thing is fate? Once protector, Imaru became the threat. After being slain by Kuldra, Imaru became a blighted thing. She refused to pass into the afterlife and wedged herself within the river of souls, feasting on the dead of Fellhollow in search of power. Once the guardian of her beloved adopted children, Imaru was lost to everything but the rage and the grief. She would have torn apart the world for one more shot at Kuldra.

Fortunately, that won't be an option.
