Prized for its lightweight and nimble nature, linen armour finds favour among apprentice wizards and those who value agility. Composed of layered cloth, it forms a rudimentary defence capable of withstanding minor assaults.
At first, acolytes would spend time at the wizard's tower to learn about the magic the armour would protect the wearer against. It was common for young priestly acolytes to become enamoured with the mysterious life of the apprentice wizards. They would see them hurling spells with skill and panache, making their lives of quiet contemplation seem awfully dull in response. Many young acolytes would make linen armour for themselves, practising spellcasting in secret.
The priests soon discovered their numbers dwindling, while the wizard's guild gained more members. So, the decree was given that robes were to be crafted in silent contemplation, far away from those who would later wear them. This would keep fewer acolytes from being lured away, but the defensive prowess of the armour diminished in return.
The high priests considered this a reasonable exchange.
