The best way to get leaves to stay healthy, is to instil within them a healthy sense of fear. By pruning away the leaves that have allowed themselves to fall to weakness, frailty and disease, you show the other leaves what happens if they don't behave.
I find that whispering their failures to the plant, as I slice away parts of their extremities, emboldens the plant with a desire to thrive.
