Biohazard

Investigate the strange corruption afflicting the residents of Dowdun Reach.

Zanik, beneath The Approach in Dowdun Reach, is tracing the corruption in the keep's residents. Ten samples from the corrupted ravens, three reagents from around the Reach and a climb to the roof of the Grand Hall, where the source turns out to be a demon in a chicken. Picking up a corrupted essence sample from any raven starts the quest just as well as talking to her. Ravens need arrows or bolts.

  • Dowdun Reach SQ3 Midnight Lilly, The Courtyard
  • Dowdun Reach SQ3 Zanik (NPC), The Approach

Steps

5
  1. 1

Speak to Zanik about the Corrupted Essence you got from a strange raven.

  2. 2

Gather 10 biological samples from strange ravens in Dowdun Reach, and bring them to Zanik.

The corrupted ravens are scattered across the region; each drops a corrupted essence sample. Some players report a raven or two that never show, so don't be surprised if you have to roam for the last ones.

  3. 3

Bring Zanik the ingredients: Dragon Blood, a Twilight Lily and some Unholy Water.

Dragon blood is from any dragon in the Reach, or a dragon wolf back in Fellhollow if you'd rather an easier kill. The twilight lily glows blue in front of the anima tree in The Lake, just south-west of Zanik. Unholy water flows from the hands of a statue behind The Cathedral, with three Zamorakian acolytes, a Mage of Zamorak and two elite Black Knights nearby; you can sneak to the fountain south-west of them without a fight.

  4. 4

Find the source of the cthonian infection, somewhere high up in Dowdun Reach.

From The Nexus go to The Grand Hall and Windstep onto its roof, past a Black Knight sniper and a guardian. Putrilius, a corrupted chicken and one of the last cthonian demons, is up there and talks.

  5. 5

Return to Zanik and explain the situation.

    Zanik hears the whole story.

On completion

It turns out that some of Dowdun Reach's unusual situation was the result of an ancient chthonian demon… who is now unhappily a chicken. Still, with Zanik's help, you should be one step closer to finding a cure for these poor - *checks notes* - evil, Zamorakian cultists.

Tips

1

The reward is the Zamorak cape with its recipe and 50 infernal fragments. Putrilius keeps trading ten corrupted essence samples for infernal fragments afterwards.

Dialogue (89 lines)

Putrilius: If you bring me more of that essence you've found in the ravens, I'll give you some infernal fragments for every ten essence you bring me.

Pusilineous: Bwak?

Putrilius: Bwak?

Putrilius: I am Putriulius, grand-sub-sub-clerk of the great office of numerical records... which is to say that in the cthonian hierarchy, I was no one.

Putrilius: I am a cthonian demon. Once we were the rulers of Infernus. It was an existence of complex contracts and even more complicated culinary practices.

Putrilius: Must you call it an infection? You make me sound like a common cold!

Putrilius: My existence is just a joke to you, isn't it? Can you imagine what it is like for a being that has watched the rise and fall of civilisations... to be bound in such a feathery prison?

Putrilius: Bwaa... Oh, it's you. I don't need to do the clucky thing. Oh, you've got some essence on you? Here, let me take it off your hands. Here you go.

Putrilius: Bwaa.. Oh, it's you. I don't need to do the clucky thing. What do you want? I've already agreed I'll do what I can to quell the infection.

Putrilius: I was small, quiet and easily forgotten, which goes a long way to explain why I wasn't eaten. I lived my life the blandest way imaginable, but I was happy in my own little way.

Putrilius: Which is to say that we ate one another. In doing so, we gained strength, power, prestige, all the things a growing protean entity might need.

Putrilius: I had made myself small and split myself into hundreds of little versions of myself, nestling inside what passes for a brain in avernic demons, later spreading to some humans.

Putrilius: If you were in my position, you would have gone mad long, long ago.

Putrilius: It's a surprisingly complicated language considering the source... oh... err... I mean, bwakbwak bwaaaak?

Putrilius: Um... yes, well... I mean... bwak!

Putrilius: No, very clearly, I am a chicken... err, I mean... bwak bwak, cockadoodlesomethingorother.

Putrilius: I would love to, honestly, I would. I got quite used to a life as little more than an observer, tagging along with the lesser demons.

Putrilius: When the rebellion happened, my people were destroyed, in part by the very contracts we had created. Legal loopholes became the noose around our protoplasmic necks.

Putrilius: I could nudge, but couldn't control, so I lived quite happily as a spectator. Watching life from the safety of someone else's skull. That was until that big stone got smashed.

Putrilius: So, no, I do not have any eggs for you!

Putrilius: Urgh, I just can't do it anymore. How far from grace I have fallen to spend my aeons pretending to be a common farm fowl.

Putrilius: It was entertaining and I never needed to worry about being eaten by my fellow cthonians. But, unfortunately, the only part of me I can actually affect is.. well... this bit, in the chicken.

Putrilius: But I had an idea. Where the rest of my kind went big, I went small... very, very small. Unbound as my kind are by your rather rigid notions of biology, I was able to split myself into little forms and crawled off to find my fortune.

Putrilius: With the energies that were released, so too was something else. An ancient consciousness. Not strong enough to infect the minds of individuals, but my fractured parts were less able to defend themselves.

Putrilius: I would say I am part of this madness, yes, though I do not exactly claim credit for it. It was that... thing... that Dreaming Stone's mind that sent this wildly out of control.

Putrilius: I am Putrilius. Once one of the last remaining cthonian demons who were the rightful rulers of Infernus, before it all went so very wrong.

Putrilius: Still, if you can get the Dreaming Stone under control, and its inhabitant can behave, I am willing to work to undo this nonsense. Though it might take some time.

Putrilius: Oh, but you're somewhat overburdened. Best come back when you've got some space free.

Putrilius: I nestled inside what you would call the physical forms of the avernics, and survived the great purge as a spectator, rather than a player. I lived, they died, so I call it a good plan.

Putrilius: What resulted is something like a civil war inside the flesh. Energies and consciousnesses ran rampant, warping and changing the hosts into what you see now.

Putrilius: When the war started I split myself up into teeny tiny little versions of myself and hid like a common parasite in the lesser, avernic demons. An excellent plan I thought, until I came here.

Putrilius: Look, tell you what. That essence you've been collecting, if you find any more of it, bring it back here. For every ten essence, I'll exchange you some of these infernal fragments. Fair deal, no?

Putrilius: Frustratingly, I am largely unable to regain control of the other bits of me, and now I am constrained to this feathered monstrosity.

Putrilius: If you find any more, I'll be happy to take it off your hands.

Zanik: Oh, hey, don't mind the cell, it's oddly comforting. I've been on the surface so long, I'd almost forgotten what it's like under the ground.

Zanik: Oh, hey, don't mind the cell, it's oddly comforting. I've been on the surface so long, I'd almost forgotten what it's like under the ground.

Zanik: I'm going to need some Dragon Blood, Unholy Water and the leaves of a Twilight Lily.

Zanik: Thanks again for helping figure out what was going on!

Zanik: There is nothing of interest.

Zanik: It's quieter here too, gives me time to think and look into stuff. This whole place, it's riddled with some sort of infection, or corruption, both magical and... well... more.

Zanik: It's quieter here too, gives me time to think and look into stuff. This whole place, it's riddled with some sort of infection, or corruption, both magical and... well... more.

Zanik: There is nothing of interest.

Zanik: A cthonian demon... trapped in a chicken? Well, that must be embarrassing. Still, you've got them to promise to rein in their infection, and that means I can work on a cure.

Zanik: If we can find that central intelligence, it would help in finding a cure down the line. Since ravens were most infected, maybe look for somewhere they frequent? Somewhere high up?

Zanik: Hopefully, we can keep that demonic corruption contained in Dowdun Reach...

Zanik: I see you've already found the weird ravens and I'm sure you can see how weird they are right now.

Zanik: There are ravens around this keep that are... stranger than the rest. More vibrant, a little luminescent.

Zanik: Don't tell me you haven't seen the dragons roaming about? The blood of a dragon helps add strength to the solution. Unfortunately, you're going to need to kill one to get it.

Zanik: Water that's been blessed by the priests of Zamorak. I'd look in the temple, maybe not everything there has been tainted?

Zanik: The Twilight Lily is a special flower that grows in damp dark places. I think I saw one by that tree in the lake, further inside the cave.

Zanik: You've got them all. Great! May I take them?

Zanik: It'll take a while though, years probably, but we might see this place recover over time. Thanks for all your help. Here, something to thank you for your effort.

Zanik: You already have a Twilight Lily.

Zanik: If you can gather samples from, say... ten of them, I can maybe get a sense of what's been causing their strange behaviour. It might help me get to the bottom of the insanity in the keep.

Zanik: You already have the Unholy Water.

Zanik: Shouldn't be a problem for a strong adventurer like you, right?

Zanik: It's not much, but it's very fashionable in these parts.

Zanik: Brilliant. Right, let's take a look at what we have here... hrmm... there's a lot of magical energy here, a bit like the dragonkin effigies we've seen...

Zanik: Oh, right. Well I'll need them to continue. Let me know when you're ready to hand them over.

Zanik: Fantastic! You've got enough there for me to study. I'm going to need a few more things, though, before I can learn anything from them. If you're still willing to help.

Zanik: If you can gather ten samples from them, I can study them to see if I can unlock any clues as to the nature of the madness infecting in Dowdun Reach.

Zanik: Wait... there's more than one infection here. One magical, one biological and one distinctly demonic. Not avernic, though. Oh no, this is rare indeed.

Zanik: Oh, you've got your hands full right now. Come back and see me when you've got some space free.

Zanik: I need you to get me some reagents so I can study this corruption.

Zanik: There's traces of cthonian demon here. See the way it wriggles? It's odd though, a bit like a parasite. It's part of a bigger whole though, there must be a central intelligence for it somewhere.

Zanik: First, I'm going to need some dragon blood. You can get it from any dragon you find. Though, I'm sure they won't be willing to surrender it without a fight.

Zanik: If we can find that central intelligence, it would help in finding a cure down the line. Since ravens were most infected, maybe look for somewhere they frequent? Somewhere high up?

Zanik: Then I'm going to need a twilight lily. They grow deep in the dark, by underground lakes. There's one not far from here.

Zanik: Lastly, I'm going to need some unholy water... It's like holy water, only from Zamorak worshippers. There's probably a fountain somewhere near the cathedral that has some.
