Shrimp Catcher

The Wise Old Man has some tips on how to grow as an amateur angler.

Crafting a coarse net (2 coarse thread) starts this fishing lesson with the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village. He wants a sardine, and a sardine needs a rod, which needs Fishing level 3, which you get from the net.

Steps

3
  1. 1

Speak to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village to learn about Fishing.

Pick option 2 with the Wise Old Man and let him reminisce; the conversation ends with the sardine request and four optional questions about fishing.

  2. 2

Fish a Sardine at a fishing spot near the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village.

Stand in a net fishing spot with the net equipped to trawl shrimp until you reach Fishing 3, which unlocks rods. An Ash Rod is 1 ash log and 1 coarse thread at the crafting table, and each shrimp turns into one shrimp bait. At a rod spot equip both rod and bait, hold the cast and release so it lands in the spot (too weak or too strong misses), then strafe left and right against the fish: a blue bar means it's tiring, red means it's fighting and burning your stamina. Reel in when the option appears; if your stamina empties first it escapes. The catch is a sardine or a trout.

  3. 3

Return to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village.

    Hand him the sardine.

On completion

Fishing is no longer a daydream to you.

Dialogue (14 lines)

Wise Old Man: Anything else I can help you with?

Wise Old Man: Ah, wonderful: a delicious sardine. It brings back old memories. Now I just need to fry it up, just like old grampa used to. Thank you, adventurer. Here, for your troubles.

Wise Old Man: Aha, a very useful tool you've managed to make for yourself, there. Why, I remember in my, admittedly distant, youth, spending countless hours trying to catch something from a local pond with one. The owners were not happy.

Wise Old Man: Still looking for fish? I have a few tips that might help.

Wise Old Man: It is the simplest thing in the world. Just equip your net in your hands, stand inside of the Net Fishing Spot and start trawling. The small fish are hidden away, among all types of junk, so don't be discouraged.

Wise Old Man: Oh, now those are interesting. You see, each fish has different tastes, and if you have bait that a fish likes equipped while fishing, you get a better chance of catching them.

Wise Old Man: That's where it gets interesting. Fish don't exactly want to be caught, so they will put up a fight! Once one bites, it'll try to bolt and you'll need to wear it out. Move from side to side to counter the direction it's swimming in and keep the pressure on.

Wise Old Man: They say fish-based food is the best way to restore your lost health! Definitely worth the effort to catch and cook them!

Wise Old Man: Why, if you can find yourself a nice spot, it can be a relaxing way to wile away the dull daylight hours between adventures - challenging yourself to find that one pristine fish you see, mockingly swimming in the waters before you.

Wise Old Man: The more you practice, the easier it will become to catch something. Stronger fish require stronger nets, so remember to upgrade!

Wise Old Man: Some fish like eating other, smaller, fish - the sort you can find with your net. Others prefer a moving target, and jingly things like feathers draw their attention.

Wise Old Man: Do it long enough and the fish will become exhausted for a short time. That's your cue to reel it in! Just keep an eye on your stamina and don't get sloppy, or you'll snap the line and watch your prize swim away.

Wise Old Man: Boil them, roast them, put them in a stew. You can make all sorts of delicious dishes from all sorts of fishes. Oh, and if you find some really nice ones, you can put them on display if you want to show off your angling skills.

Wise Old Man: Ah, but I haven't eaten a good fish for ages! Hrmm... how about you look around and see if you could find me a sardine in the waters around here? You'll need a Fishing Rod to catch one though! You may want to consider crafting some bait too!
