Wanted!
Hunt down the Beast Tamers
Vannaka, at the tent in front of The Library just after you cross into The Courtyard, wants the training journals of three Black Knights who tamed demonic beasts: the Rat Master, the Hound Master and the Summoner. Three real fights in any order, each against the tamer and the whole pack at once.
On the map
3- Dowdun Reach SQ2 Vannaka (NPC), The Courtyard
- Dowdun Reach SQ2 Rat Master (Area), The Menagerie
- Dowdun Reach SQ2 Hound Master (Area), The Garrison
Steps
5- 1
Bring the Journal to Vannaka
All three journals back to Vannaka, who expected dark rites and finds the tamers' secret was kindness. He has no time for that and hands you a trinket vestige instead.
- 2
Journal Pages Collected 0/3
Rat Master Skrexis: south-west through The Library into The Menagerie, past the lesser blue dragon on the entrance, to a ledge at the end of the lower path. Kill him and his hellrats; the journal is on a rock directly behind where he stood, left of the statue.
- 3
Journal Pages Collected 1/3
Houndmaster Rexiton: The Garrison, down to the lower floors of the forward building. He and the whole hellhound pack come at once, so manage the dogs while you keep hitting him. The journal lies on the table in the central kennel.
- 4
Journal Pages Collected 2/3
Summoner Flament: south to The Cathedral and down into the crypts, next to The Lake (the nearest nodestone). Delrom, his demon, hits hard. The journal is on the plinth at the back wall under the demon gargoyle.

Journal Pages Collected 3/3 Return to Vannaka
On completion
Vannaka wanted you to hunt down some evil beastmasters, to see how they might control their demonic minions. The answer? Kindness. There's a lesson here, probably.
Tips
1The reward is the corroded jewellery vestige, which is what the
Unholy Symbol is made from.
Dialogue (36 lines)
Vannaka: You've got them all? Great, well done, young pup. Let's take a look at them then, see what sinister secrets they've learned...
It's too dangerous to read this right now.
Vannaka: Black knights. I had hoped their special brand of madness was kept to the mainland, but here they are, even if they're not quite the knights I know.
Vannaka: What do you need, young pup?
Vannaka: Being nice to demons, what utter nonsense.
Vannaka: Nothing interesting happens
Vannaka: Huh? Really? I was expecting dark rites, sinister spells and all that Zamorakian magic nonsense, but it's just...treating them nicely?
Vannaka: Nothing interesting happens
Vannaka: Nothing interesting happens
Vannaka: Three of them seem particularly dangerous, having learned how to bind demonic beasts to their service somehow.
Vannaka: It's a hand written journal
Vannaka: I have a horrible feeling there's a metaphor there, but I'm too old and jaded to think about it. Here, you did what I asked, so I owe you something for your efforts.
Vannaka: It's a hand written journal
Vannaka: It's a hand written journal
Vannaka: Young pup, I need you to track these three down and bring me their training manuals. I want to know what cruelties they have unleashed on the beasts here.
Vannaka: According to the records here, his name was Walthar Skrexis. Kept mostly to himself, and had terrible hygiene habits.
Vannaka: From what I can tell, before the maddening corruption took him over, he was a knight called Philius Rexiton.
Vannaka: Lester Flament, is what the records say. Sounds like an odious person, unpopular even in a place like this.
Vannaka: This trinket should help you with all these demonic creatures. I don't think we have the time for the friendlier approach.
Vannaka: Countless reports from the custodial team about how he would leave crumbs and bits of food everywhere, constantly attracting vermin.
Vannaka: Records seemed to indicate that he was a noble with a love for dogs. So it makes sense that he would try and wield the power of dog shaped demons.
Vannaka: Nowadays he's found wandering the crypts south of here, below the temple, with one eerily loyal demon.
Rat Master's Journal: I love rats, they're so cute. What with their little whispers and their adorable inability to control their bladder.
Hound Master's Journal: I know they're just demons, but they're such good girls. I taught Gnasher how to sit, and Fido how to fetch.
Summoner's Journal: I'm not sure if demon's even have birthdays, but I think I should get Delrom a cake. It's the polite thing to do.
Vannaka: Seems that he's still doing that, even with his mind turned to soup by this strange corruption madness.
Vannaka: He spends his time in the dungeons at the garisson, on the lower floors. There he seems to have gained the loyalty, or at least service, of a whole pack of hellhounds.
Vannaka: Young pup, I need you to track down three demon trainers, and bring me their journals. I want to know what cruelties they have unleashed on the beasts here.
Vannaka: I see you've got one of their training journals. Good work, young pup, but I need all three to unravel their techniques.
Rat Master's Journal: The tragedy being that they only live for such a short time. A year, maybe two. Barely a heartbeat.
Hound Master's Journal: Sure, Fido came back with a junior knight's still beating heart in her mouth, instead of the ball, but she's trying, bless her.
Summoner's Journal: After all, they may be big, scary, and made of claws, but they might be the best friends I've ever had.
Vannaka: Seems he spends most of his times in the menagerie, south west of here.
Rat Master's Journal: But these hellrats? They live forever! An eternity of cute twitchy whiskers and fluffy little bellies in need of a scritch. What could be better?
Hound Master's Journal: All these mages and their complicated summoning and binding nonsense, and really all you need to do is throw them a decent steak every once in a while.
Summoner's Journal: Oooh, I should make sure the cake has sprinkles!
