Woodcutting
Chop down trees or tear up saplings to level this skill. 12 perks from level 4 to 99.
How to train it
Nothing in Woodcutting is level-gated: any axe cuts any tree. XP is paid per point of damage you deal to the wood (1 XP each), plus a small per-swing bonus and 3 XP each time a tree falls or a trunk section breaks. A full tree is the standing trunk and seven log stages (whole, two halves, four quarters), so felling and clearing one pays 24 XP in completion bonuses on top of the damage. Standard chops are the better swing on a standing tree, overhead chops on the fallen trunk.
Base XP per fully processed tree: ash 124, oak 156, willow 226, maple 125, yew 209, magic 1,017. That table is why ash and oak stay worth cutting all game: they have the least health, so a high-tier axe shreds them, and they grow everywhere. Willows cluster around the Fellhollow ponds, with nature spirits, zombies and skeletons for company; maples fill The Courtyard in Dowdun Reach, one of its few quiet corners, and drop a seed almost every time; yews are scattered across the desert, where you manage the Scorch between clusters; magic trees are the Scorned Wilderness raid's and regrow every day or two.
Gear: the best logging axe you can make, one piece of mage armour (hat or body) for the -50% stamina regeneration delay, the
Lumber Backpack (+10% Woodcutting XP, +10% wood, -10% wood weight, +15% special drops),
Leggings Of Lightness for 50 more carry weight and the
Inspiring Ring of Woodcutting for +5% XP. Food and potions: a
Glazed Pumpkin Sandwich or
Meat Twist Sandwich carries both Knowledgable Nourishment (+10% XP) and Foreman's Feast (-33% chopping stamina), stacked with a Lumberjack or Focused Woodcutting potion (+15% or +30%). The Personal Chest spell stores 1,980 logs weightlessly and Magical Mending repairs the axe in the field.
The fast method is a tree farm. Plant two or more rows of a dozen trees from the seeds trees drop (leave the stumps, they're what drops them), fell the whole row with Axtral Projection, cast Splinter from the middle of the trunk pile, and Trunk Totem the rest while Splinter cools down. Splinter on totems and Axtral Projection both shave a little XP, so the most reliable version is to fell, totem the logs and chop the totems by hand, standing on top of them so you don't hit the stumps below; willow, maple or yew rows pay up to 500 XP a chop that way. Trees take three days to regrow, so keep several rows going.
